Call of the wild answered in the capital

Shifting priorities mean home movers are looking for better access to open space but that doesn’t have to come at the expense of living in London.

While the phrase ‘London streets are paved with gold’ - a saying from the story Dick Whittington and His Cat – is widely used to describe the city’s opportunities, many actually think London streets are paved, full stop.

It’s an urban myth that the capital is a concrete jungle – you only have to tour South West London’s neighbourhoods to discover an abundance of wide, open spaces that create a sense of freedom and provide a dose of fresh air.

London’s blend of convenience, culture and grassy commons is set to keep people engaged going forwards, backed up by a new survey about moving intentions. Research commissioned by Canary Wharf Group, using independent data from Atomik Research, set out to identify what was now on a purchaser’s moving ‘wish list’, conducted at a stage when vaccines look set to restore a sense of normality.

Of those questioned, 43% said that the ability to visit family and friends, and the proximity to shops, cafés and green spaces ranked, highest. When asked about their living environment, 51% of people said that having access to outdoor space, an abundance of natural light and pleasing views onto water or green space would improve their wellbeing.

You only have to look at our list of parks, commons and heaths here in South West London to see how our neighbourhoods tick all the ‘wish list’ boxes. From Bishops Park in Fulham Battersea Park, Tooting Commons and Putney Heath, to Clapham Common, The Rookery in Streatham and Wandsworth Common, existing residents and potential movers can’t fail to be impressed by the acres of open space on the doorstep.

Aspire will continue to shine a light on South West London’s green credentials with the aim of attracting buyers, sellers, tenants and landlords.
